EXPLORING THE FUTURE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY: SANT'ANNA SCHOOL BIOROBOTICS RESEARCHERS PARTICIPATE IN TECHNOLOGY HUB EVENT, AT MICO MILAN, ON MAY 17-19
A 3-day event at MiCo Milan (Fiera Milano Congressi), Technology Hub – L’evento professionale delle tecnologie innovative, will take place on May 17-19, 2018. Scientists, industry and multi-sector stakeholders are invited to join the Technology Hub event to discuss advancements in medical technology and innovations such as wearable exoskeletons helping people walk, medical devices and equipment for rehabilitation after trauma, artificial organs, and robotic prosthetic limbs that allow disabled people to perform daily tasks, semi-immersive virtual reality therapy for neuro-rehabilitation.
Nicola Vitiello, a researcher of the Biorobotics Institute at Sant’Anna School who coordinates the EU project CYBERLEGs Plus Plus (CYBERnetic LowEr-Limb CoGnitive Ortho-prosthesiS Plus Plus) is attending the meeting to present his work. The project aims to assess the technical and economic feasibility of the powered robotic ortho-prosthesis, a wearable device to improve the mobility of trans-femoral amputees.
The CYBERLEGs project, in partnership with Fondazione Don Gnocchi (since the 1980s the Don Gnocchi Foundation has been involved in efforts to provide rehabilitation services to people with disabilities. In January 2018, Sant’Anna School Professor Maria Chiara Carrozza has been appointed as Scientific Director) attempts to track normal knee behavior through natural dynamics. The knee actuation will allow performing sit-to-stand transition and modifying the behavior of the prosthesis during normal walking.
According to the World Health Organization reports, population aging is increasing the need for long-term care services. Medical technology innovation can play a crucial role in sustaining health and improve rehabilitation services and patient care. The Milan Technology Hub will also explore how innovations can generate benefits for the whole health system and distribute them among all stakeholders.
